The girls on the Wesleyan Academy softball team were waiting for their next turns at bat during practice, stamping their feet to stay warm. Eighthgrader Taylor Bisbee shivered (发抖) a little as she watched her teammate Paris White play. The two didnt know each other wellTaylor had just moved to town a month or so before.Suddenly, Paris fell to the ground. “Pariss eyes rolled back,” Taylor says. “She started shaking. I knew it was an emergency.”It certainly was. Paris had suffered a sudden heart failure. Without immediate medical care, Paris would die. At first, no one moved. The girls were in shock. Then the softball coach shouted out, “Does anyone know CPR?”CPR is a lifesaving technique. To do CPR, you press on the sick persons chest so that blood moves through the body and takes oxygen to organs. Without oxygen, the brain is damaged quickly.Amazingly, Taylor had just taken a CPR course the day before. Still, she hesitated. She didnt think she knew it well enough. But when no one else came forward, Taylor ran to Paris and began doing CPR. “It was scary. I knew it was the difference between life and death,” says Taylor.Taylors swift action helped her teammates calm down. One girl called 911. Two more ran to get the school nurse, who brought a defibrillator, an electronic device (器械) that can shock the heart back into work. Luck stayed with them:Pariss heartbeat returned.“I know I was really lucky,” Paris says now. “Most people dont survive this. My team saved my life.”Experts say Paris is right:For a sudden heart failure, the single best chance for survival is having someone nearby step in and do CPR quickly.Today, Paris is back on the softball team. Taylor will apply to college soon. She wants to be a nurse. “I feel more confident in my actions now,” Taylor says. “I know I can act under pressure in a scary situation.”21What happened to Paris on a March day?AShe caught a bad cold.BShe had a sudden heart problem.CShe was knocked down by a ball.DShe shivered terribly during practice. 由第三段第二句“Paris had suffered a sudden heart failure.” B。22Why does Paris say she was lucky?AShe made a worthy friend.BShe recovered from shock.CShe received immediate CPR.DShe came back on the softball team. C。23Which of the following words can best describe Taylor?AEnthusiastic and kind.BCourageous and calm.CCooperative and generous.DAmbitious and professional. B。B If you see someone drowning, speed is very important. Once you get him out of the water, if he isnt breathing, you have four minutes before his brain is completely destroyed. Support his neck, tilt (使翘起) his head back and press his chin (下巴) upwards. This stops the tongue blocking the airway in the throat and is sometimes enough to get him breathing again. If that doesnt work, start mouthtomouth breathing. Press his nostrils (鼻孔) together with your fingers. Open your mouth and take a deep breath. Blow into his lungs until his chest rises, then remove your mouth and watch his chest fall. Repeat twelve times a minute. Keep doing so until help arrives. To bring a child back to life, keep your lips around his mouth and nose and gently blow into his mouth. Give the first four breaths as quickly as possible to fill the blood with oxygen (氧气). If, in spite of your efforts, he starts turning a bluegrey colour, and you can feel no pulse (脉搏), then pressing is the last chance of saving his life. With arms straight, rock forwards, pressing down on the lower half of the breast bone. Dont be too hard or you may break a rib (肋骨). Check how effective you are, seeing if his colour improves or his pulse becomes independent to your chest pressing. If this happens, stop the pressing. Otherwise continue until rescue arrives. If you dont want to be drowned, here are some useful tips for you: Never swim alone. Never swim at a beach if there is no life guard. Never swim after a meal or when you feel hungry. Never rely on rings, floats or other swimming aids. You may lose them or they may let you sink. Do not stay in the water too long, especially if it is cold. Before you dive, be sure that the water is deep enough and that you will not hit anybody. Never go out in a boat if you cant swim or if you are not wearing a life jacket.24This passage is mainly about _.Ahow to save people out of the waterBhow to give first aid to a drowning person and how to keep safe when swimmingChow to do mouthtomouth breathingDhow to save a child from a river答案:B主旨大意题。 B。25Once you get a drowning man out of the water, if he isnt breathing, you must first _.Aget him breathing again Btake him to the nearest hospital as soon as possibleCfind someone to help you Dcall the First Aid Centre答案:A细节理解题。根据文章第一段第一句中的“speed is very important”和第四句“This stops the tongue blocking the airway in the throat and is sometimes enough to get him breathing again.” A。26If the drowning boy has no pulse, _. Apressing his chin upwards is enough to get him breathing Bblowing air into his mouth is sure to save his life Cpressing his nostrils together with your fingers can work Dpressing is the last chance of saving his life答案:D细节理解题。根据文章第二段第三句中的“. he starts turning a bluegrey colour, and you can feel no pulse (脉搏), then pressing is the last chance of saving his life”可知,如果摸不到脉搏,按压是救人性命的最后希望。故选D。27Which of the following statements is true? AIf a man does not breathe for four minutes, his brain will be completely destroyed. BIf you see someone drowning, you must give him mouthtomouth breathing. CWhen pressing, you can do it as hard as you can. DDont stop pressing his chest, if the drowning man starts breathing. 根据第一段第二句中的“. if he isnt breathing, you have four minutes before his brain is completely destroyed”可知,溺水人员若停止了呼吸,你有四分钟的时间对其进行急救,否则他的大脑会完全受损。故选A。C First aid is emergency care for a victim of sudden illnesses or injuries until more skillful medical treatment is available. It may save a life or improve certain vital signs including pulse, temperature, a clear airway (气道), and breathing. In minor emergencies, first aid may prevent a victims condition from turning worse and provide relief from pain. First aid must be administered as quickly as possible. In the case of the critically injured, a few minutes can make a difference between complete recovery and loss of life. Firstaid measures depend upon a victims needs and the providers level of knowledge and skill. Knowing what not to do in an emergency is as important as knowing what to do. Improperly moving a person with a neck injury, for example, can lead to permanent spinal (脊柱的) injury and paralysis (瘫痪) Despite the variety of injuries possible, several principles of first aid apply to all emergencies. The first step is to call for professional medical help. The victim, if conscious, should be reassured that medical aid has been requested, and asked for permission to provide any first aid. Next, assess the scene, asking other people or the injured persons family or friends about details of the injury or illness, any care that may have already been given, and preexisting conditions such as diabetes (糖尿病) or heart trouble. The victim should be checked for a medical bracelet or card that describes special medical conditions. Unless the accident scene becomes unsafe or the victim may suffer further injury, do not move the victim. First aid requires rapid assessment of victims to determine whether lifethreatening conditions exist. One method for evaluating a victims condition is known by the acronym (首字母缩写词) ABC, which stands for: AAirway: Is it open and clear? BBreathing: Is the person breathing? Look, listen, and feel for breathing. CCirculation: Is there a pulse? Is the person bleeding externally? Check skin colour and temperature for additional indications of circulation problems.28First aid may bring about all the following results EXCEPT_.Asaving a victims lifeBpreventing a victims condition from getting worseCrelieving a victim from painDhelping a person avoid sudden illnesses or injuries答案:D细节理解题。 29Before we offer first aid to a victim, it is very important for us to _.Amake sure what to do and what not to doBrefer to all kinds of handbooks on first aidCremove the ring or bracelet he/she may be wearingDtake him/her to a hospital at once答案:A细节理解题。 30When giving first aid to a victim, you should first of all _.Aremove him from the accident sceneBturn him overCcall for professional medical helpDexamine him carefully答案:C细节理解题。 C。31You may assess a victims condition by all the following EXCEPT_.Achecking whether there is a pulseBlooking, listening and feeling for breathingCreplacing his medical bracelet or cardDexamining whether the airway is open and clear答案:C推理判断题。 DCan exercise during childhood protect you against memory loss many decades later? Exercise early in life seems to have lifelong benefits for the brain, in rats at least.“This is an animal study, but it shows that physical activity at a young age is very importantnot just for physical development, but for the whole lifelong track of cognitive (认知的) development during ageing,” says Martin Wojtowicz of the University of Toronto, Canada.“In humans, it may delay the appearance of Alzheimers disease (阿尔茨海默病), possibly to the point of preventing it.”Wojtowiczs team divided 80 young male rats into two equal groups, and placed running wheels in the cages of one group for a period of six weeks. Around four months laterwhen the rats had reached middle agethe team taught all the rats to connect an electric shock with being in a specific box. When placed in the box, they froze with fear. Two weeks later, the team tested the rats in three situations: exactly the same box in the same room, the same box with the room arranged differently, and a completely different box in a different room. The rats without access to a running wheel when they were young now froze the same percentage of times in each of these situations, suggesting they couldnt remember which one was dangerous. But those that had been able to run in their youth froze 40 to 50 percent less in both changed box settings.“The results suggest
