1930,andgraduatedfromPekingUniversityMedicalSchoolin1955.Aftershegraduated,she

workedattheChinaAcademyofTraditionalChineseMedicineinBeijing.In1967,theChinese

governmentformedateamofscientistswiththeobjectiveofdiscoveringanewtreatmentfor

malaria,andTuYouyouwasamongthefirstresearcherschosen.Inthebeginning,TuYouyou

wenttoHainan,wheremalariawasmorecommon,tostudymalariapatients.In1969,shebecame

theheadoftheprojectinBeijing,anddecidedtoreviewancientChinesemedicaltextstofind

traditionalbotanicaltreatmentsforthedisease.Herteamexaminedover2,000oldmedicaltexts,

andtested380distinctancientChinesemedicaltreatmentsthatshowedpromiseinthefight

againstmalaria.

Onemedicaltextfromthefourthcenturysuggestedusingtheextractfromsweet

wormwoodtotreatafever.Tu'steamtestedacollectionofdriedwormwoodleavesbutfoundno

effect.Theythentriedboilingfreshwormwood,andusingtheliquidobtainedfromthistotreat

malaria,butthisdidnotworkeither.Theirprojectgotstuck.However,TuYouyouwouldnot

acknowledgedefeat.Sheanalysedthemedicaltextsagain,andbychance,shefoundonesentence

suggestingadifferentwaytotreatthewormwood.Sheconcludedthatboilingthesweet

wormwoodapparentlydestroyeditsmedicalproperties.Usingalowertemperaturetodrawoutthe

extract,shefoundasubstancethatworked.Afterfailingmorethan190times,theteamfinally

succeededin1971.TuYouyouandherteammemberseveninsistedontestingthemedicineon

themselvestomakesurethatitwassafe.Later,themedicinewastestedonmalariapatients,most

ofwhomrecovered.Thismedicine,whichwascalledartemisinin,soonbecameastandard

treatmentformalaria.

AccordingtoTuYouyou,thediscoveryofartemisininwasateameffort.Uponhearingthat

shehadbeenawardedtheNobelPrize,shesaid,“Thehonourisnotjustmine.Thereisateam

behindme,andallthepeopleofmycountry.Thissuccessprovesthegreatvalueoftraditional

Chinesemedicine.ItisindeedanhonourforChina9sscientificresearchandChinesemedicineto
