A project conducted by Johann Siau, a senior lecturer at the University of Hertfordshires School of Engineering and Technology, has built on the universitys InterHome project aimed to create a home that supervises people living at home who are weak or elderly. “Weve developed a wristband type of device(装置), ”said Johann Siau, “which allows us to monitor the condition of an elderly person, or whoever is wearing the device. It allows us to collect data of a person to see if the person has fallen or is away from where he is supposed to be. It connects an elderly person with an assisted living type of device with the InterHome. ”The assisted living project is part of the universitys wider InterHome project, which is the development of a smart house. The house stores the usage patterns of the person living there and can adapt to making it use as little energy as possible. Connecting the two together and building the service element(元素)allow us to introduce the assisted living idea to care for the elderly. Its very important that these technologies are there to help and support rather than to replace any of the existing services. The InterHome is not just a prototype(雏形)or a vehicle for research. Researchers and students make sure that all the technologies work together. Students get experience by developing new hardware and software themselves. It requires a variety of skills from studentselectronic engineers, computer students, design students and so on. “The present plan we are working on is a smart home project in Watford with some commercial companies, ”said Johann Siau. “We are looking at how a smarter home can provide extra value services. ”【语篇概述】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了一个旨在为居家老弱人士服务的智能屋项目。5. The report says parents could be wasting their money by using cash to get their kids to study more. However, the promise of a trip somewhere nice could encourage students to try harder and do better at school. Researchers from the University of Bristol (in England) and the University of Chicago (in the USA) looked at how promises of cash and tickets to events affected students studying and learning. Over 10, 000 pupils took part in the research throughout the year 2017. There was an improvement in classwork and homework, but this did not result in better test scores. Lead researcher Dr Simon Burgess suggested the research looked at the wrong areas. He said it had not looked at the things that really got students to increase their effort. He added, “Clearly, some pupils have a lot of goals and believe that education is a way of getting what they want out of life, but there are kids who think that working hard doesnt make a difference. ” He said these children think exam success is “all in your genes” because of their family background. Education expert Dr Kevan Collins said good teachers were better than promises of rewards to get children to study, especially for children from low-income families. He wrote: “What really makes the difference is how students are taught. ” 【语篇概述】本文说的是学生提高学习成绩的几个因素。9. What can encourage students to study more? A. Music. B. Trips. C. An iPad. D.
