Personally Nike is my favorite one its so simple. And I liked the stories behind them, which made me forget all other things. McDonalds, Apple, Mercedes Benz and Adidas own great logos as well, and they are among my favorites.Nike In the Greek myth, Nike is the goddess of victory and the source of inspiration for soldiers. This logo represents the wing in the famous statue of the Greek goddess. Nikes logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for $ 35, and was registered as a trademark in 1995.McDonalds The logo was designed in 1962 by Jim Schindler to resemble the archshaped(拱形的) signs on the side of the companys then walk-up hamburger stand. Later on, the two golden arches were combined together to form the M. The McDonalds name was added to the logo in 1968.Apple There are different stories behind Apples logo. The first logo was a reference to the religious story of Adam and Eve, in which the apple represented the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. One year later, the second logo was designed in 1977 by Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne, and it described Sir Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. This logo didnt stay long. One year later it was replaced almost immediately by graphic designer Rob Janoffs “rainbow apple”, a rainbow-colored silhouette(轮廓)of an apple with a bite taken out of it. And then the rainbow-colored apple was replaced by the one-colored logo in 1998. It has not been changed so far.Mercedes Benz The Mercedes Benz logo, which was originally created by Gottlieb Daimler in 1909, consists of a simple description of a three-pointed star that represents its rule of the land, the sea and the air. The company was founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Mercedes is the name of Maybachs elder daughter, while Benz came as a result of a combination with Benz, Cie and DMG in 1926.Adidas The Adidas logo, which was created by the founder of the company Adi Dassler, represents mountains, pointing towards the challenges that are seen ahead and goals that can be achieved. The logo was used for the first time in 1967.21.Which of the following time orders describes the births of the great logos?A.Nike McDonalds Apple Mercedes Benz.B.Mercedes Benz McDonalds Nike Apple.C.Mercedes Benz Apple Nike McDonalds.D.Nike Mercedes Benz McDonalds Apple22.We can learn that Apples present logo is _.A.the religious story of Adam and EveB.the rainbow-colored bitten appleC.Newtons sitting under an apple treeD.a bitten apple with only one color23.What does Nikes logo stand for?A.The wing of the Greek goddess.B.The source of inspiration for soldiers.C.The statue of the Greek goddess.D.The goddess of victory.BLittle boys dont like reading any more and even little girls dont enjoy it as much as they once did: this is the accepted wisdom inside the book industry-and in many British families, too. Parents and booksellers tend to blame the growing appeal of online entertainment and handheld games, but research from the US is challenging these assumptions.Michael Norris, an American publishing expert, will release findings in the monthly Book Publishing Report which show that, despite the best intentions, it is well-meaning mothers and fathers who often stop their sons and daughters from picking up the reading habit.“Parents have too much of a role in deciding which books their child is going to read ,” said Norris. “It is turning children off.”The results of a number of surveys Norris has carried out with hundreds of American booksellers over the past year have provided the basis for a series of tips for parents designed to help children find enjoyment in books. One of his tips is to make sure children talk directly to a librarian or a bookseller, while parents stand well back. Parents should allow children to choose their own reading material. “Even if a mother or father is just standing with the child when the bookseller asks them what they like to read, we have found that the child will give an answer they think their parent wants to hear. It will not be the same answer they would give alone,” said Norris.Norriss another tip for parents is that they do not attempt to limit books to one age range. “What we have found is that parents should not worry whether a title looks too young or too old for a child. If a book has caught their attention, then let them take it.” Children, added Norris, often enjoy reading books that are easy for them to understand. “My father made me read The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy when I was much too young and I have never read another Clancy since,” said Norris.24.What did Norris think prevents children from enjoying reading?A.Childrens interest in handheld games.B.The declining market of the book industry.C.Parents influence on childrens book selection.D.The growing popularity of online entertainment.25.What do we learn about the new study? A.Its published to improve book sales. B.It mainly focuses on British families. C.It involves many years efforts. D.It was conducted by Norris.26.What should parents do to help kids get their favorite books at bookstores? A.Introduce new books regularly. B.Let them talk with booksellers alone. C.Discuss popular books with children. D.Often seek expert advice from book sellers.27.What did Norris think of his fathers act? A.It was totally wrong. B.It was quite necessary. C.It aroused his interest in reading. D.It showed parents worries about kids.C It happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obamas Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, “a brilliantly (精彩地)written book”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar. And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they havent. In the World Book Days “Report on Guilty Secrets”, Dreams From My Father is at number 9. The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as Im not one to lie too often (Id hate to be caught out), Ill admit here and now that I havent read the entire top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, George Orwells 1984. I think its really brilliant. The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I havent read him, but havent lied about it either) and Herman Melville.Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they were speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became more indepth! But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (Ill come clean: I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so).28.How did the author find his friend a book liar?A.By judging his manner of speaking.B.By discussing the book itself.C.By mentioning a famous name.D.By looking into his background.29.Which of the following is a “guilty secret” according to the World Book Day report?A.Charles Dickens is very low on the top-ten list.B.The author admitted having read 9 books.C.42% of people pretended to have read 1984.D.Dreams From My Father is hardly read.30.By lying about reading, a person hopes to . A.appear knowledgeableB.control the conversationC.learn about the bookD.make more friends31.What is the authors attitude to 58% of readers?A.Favorable.B.UncaringC.FriendlyD.DoubtfulDMore than 2,500 tiny glass jars-each containing brightly colored powders-line the walls of a museum at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The pigment(颜料) samples make up the Forbes Pigment Collection. Art experts rely on the collection for an important scientific purpose-the colors act as standards to help them conserve and authenticate artists paintings.About a century ago, Edward Forbes, an art historian and art museum director at Harvard, noticed that the paint on some 14th-century paintings in his museums collection was deteriorating. To figure out how to save the paintings, he realized he would have to learn more about the materials used to make their paint.Today, people can buy paint in every colour of the rainbow. But variety in paint colors-and the ability to purchase those paints at a store-wasnt always possible. For centuries, artists collected and crushed(碾碎) everything from shells to rare stones to create the pigments that colored their artworks. They also used metal oxides(氧化物).From 1910 to 1944, Forbes traveled the globe collecting powdered pigments. The samples helped arts conservators understand how paint behaves on a chemical level. Paint might react to changes in light, temperature, or humidity, depending on its pigments compositions. This can affect the colors of a painting over time or even cause paint to come off the painted surface.Today, Narayan Khandekar, a senior conservation scientist at the Harvard Art Museums, is building on Forbess work by adding newer, chemically made pigments to the collection. The collection also plays an important role in helping to stop counterfeiters(伪造者). In 2007, experts compared pigments from the collection with those from a painting thought to belong to abstract artist Jackson Pollock. Chemical analysis showed that a red pigment in the painting was actually made 20 years after the artists death, proving that the artwork was a fake.32.Why does the museum house pigment samples?A.To help artists in need.B.To show the variety of paint colors.C.To help art conservators study paintings.D.To show the history of making pigments.33.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “deteriorating” in Paragraph 2?A.Dropping off. B. Breaking down. C.Cleared away. D. Gathered together.34.What can be inferred about Edward Forbes?A.He was good at chemistry.B.He collected many pigments.C.He created pigments by himself.D.He repaired a lot of old paintings.35.What may be the best title for the text?A.Colourful collection.B.Looking for pigments.C.Every pigment has its own story.D.Edward Forbes and his collection.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。Friendship is a gift of God. But it may be taken for granted in some cases and not valued. 36._ Say one has no child even after many years of marriage and the other has many children, more than they can manage. What qualities does a good friend bring to our relationship that makes the friendship so valuable? Let us examine some of these.Judgement-A good friend is rarely judgemental. We can be open in our behaviour with our good friends because we know that they will not judge us. 38._ With other people our actions and behavior are always calculated and guarded and that takes away lots of pleasure from our life.Share sorrow and losses -A friend can be depended upon to share all our problems and sorrows. 39._ Once I saw the image of a man left alone in a village after an earthquake. The whole village got killed except this man. With whom, will this man share his sorrow?
