educationalassociationthatsponsorstheSATS,decidedtolettheacronym
standonitsownasawayofaddressingcontroversyaboutthemeaningofthe
word"aptitude".TheCollegeBoardalsorejectedthealternative"Scholastic
AssessmentTest".(Englishteachersprobablypointedoutthatthisnamewas
redundant,sinceassessmentmeanstest.)
TheSATImeasuresverbalandmathreasoningabilitiesthatyou'vedeveloped
throughoutyourschoolyears.Themultiple-choicetest,developedbythenot-
for-profitEducationalTestingService,isintendedtoletstudentsdemonstrate
theirverbalandmathabilitieswithoutregardtothekindofschoolingthey've
had.AccordingtotheCollegeBoard,thetestlooksforastudent'sabilityto
understandandanalyzewrittenmaterial,todrawinferences,todifferentiate
shadesofmeaning,todrawconclusionsandsolvemathproblems-allskills
thatarenecessaryforsuccessincollegeandtheworkworld.
TheAmericanCollegeTesting(ACT)Assessment,whichwasintroducedin
1959,isanalternativetotheSATthatvirtuallyallcollegesanduniversities
nowaccept.Developersofthetesttoutitforitscurriculum-basedquestions,

ThenewerSATII:SubjectTests,formerlytheCollegeBoardAchievement
Tests,areintendedtomeasureastudent'sknowledgeofaparticularsubject,

mathematics(variouslevels),sciences,andlanguages(Chinese,French,

students'heavyburdenarethefollowingthree:firstly,itisbecauseof
educationalsystem.Suchsystemforcesstudentstolearntoomuchcomplex
butuselessinformation.Secondly,schoolsonlyquestforhigherrateof
enteringschools.Inordertogethigherrate,schoolstrytheirbesttodomore
trainingsothatstudentscan'thavetheirsparetime.Thirdly,parentshavegood
wishes.Parentsdonotwanttheirchildrentofailinthefuturecompetition.
Theyhavenootherwaybuttosendtheirchildrentoattendmoretraining.It
becomesurgenttoreducestudents'heavyburdennow.Inmyownopinion,it
isimportanttochangetheeducationalsystemintohighqualityeducation
system,toreducethecontentofthetraining,tochangethewayofevaluating
educationquality,tochangeparentsandsociety'sattitudetowardstalents.All
thesearethebasicwaysthathelpreducestudents'heavyburden.
