11、ich is under water.Its 70,000 square meters of building space features a variety of palaces,gardens and other ancient-style architectural structures.Well known for its large and priceless collection of cultural relics,it was among the first group of historical and cultural heritage sites in China to

12、 be placed under special state protection.Para 3 The Summer Palace,originally named Qingyi Yuan or the Garden of Clear Ripples,was first constructed in 1750.It was razed to the ground by the Anglo-French Allied Forces in 1860.The Government of the Qing Dynasty started to rebuild it in 1886 with fund

13、s that it had misappropriated from the Imperial Navy and other sources.Renamed two years later as Yihe Yuan or the Garden of Health and Harmony,it was supposed to serve as a summer resort for the Empress Dowager Cixi.Known also as the Summer Palace,it was ravaged by the Allied Forces of the Eight Po

14、wers that invaded China in 1900.The damage was repaired in 1902.Since the founding of the Peoples Republic of China,the Summer Palace has undergone several major renovations.Its major attractions such as the Four Great Regions,Suzhou Street,the Pavilion of Bright Scenery,the Hall of Serenity,the Wen

15、chang Galleries and the Plowing and Weaving Scenery Area have been successively restored.Para 4 The Summer Palace is a monument to classical Chinese architecture,in terms of both garden design and construction.Borrowing scenes from surrounding landscapes,it radiates not only the grandeur of an imper

16、ial garden but also the beauty of nature in a seamless combination that best illustrates the guiding principle of traditional Chinese garden design:“The works of men should match the works of Heaven.In December 1998,UNESCO included the Summer Palace on its World Heritage List with the following comm

19、 construction began in the 17th year of Emperor Guangxus reign (1891)and lasted for five years.The three-storey theater stage is the biggest and best-preserved wooden stage of delicate design and magnificent structure,and is therefore of much scientific and artistic value.Famous Beijing Opera actors

20、 of the Qing Dynasty such as Yang Xiaolou and Tan Xinpei would come here to perform for the Empress Dowager and the stage was regarded as the“Cradle of Beijing Opera.The Empress Dowager also granted special permission for some of the princes,dukes and cabinet ministers to watch Beijing opera here.Pa

21、ra 7 Visitors can imagine the scene when the Empress Dowager watched opera in this garden.A large number of precious articles used by emperors and empresses,as well as some of the gifts presented to the Qing court by foreign states,are on display here.Para 8 Long Corridor (Chang Lang)Para 9 The Long

22、 Corridor was originally built in the 15th year of Emperor Qianlongs reign (1750)and then rebuilt in the 12th year of Emperor Guangxus reign (1886)because the Anglo-French Allied Forces burned it down in 1860.It starts from Inviting the Moon Gate in the east and ends at Shizhang Pavilion in the west

23、,covering a distance of 728 meters with its 273 sections.Of all the corridors in Chinese classical gardens,the Long Corridor is the longest.On the beams there are more than 8,000 colorful paintings depicting stories from Chinese classical novels,folk tales,landscapes as well as flora and fauna.Four

24、pavilions,“Mesmerizing Scenery,“Harmonizing with the Lake,“Autumn Water and “Clear and Carefree,with octahedral structures and double eaves,were built intermittently along the corridor.Taking the Hall that Dispels the Clouds as the center,the Long Corridor stretches symmetrically to the east and the

26、ssageForbidden CityPara 1 Lying at the center of Beijing,the Forbidden City,called Gu Gong in Chinese,was the imperial palace for twenty-four emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasties.It was first built throughout 14 years during the reign of Emperor Chengzu in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).Ancient

27、 Chinese Astronomers believed that the Purple Star was in the center of heaven and the Heavenly Emperor lived in the Purple Palace.The Palace for the emperor on earth was so called the Purple City.It was forbidden to enter without special permission of the empeor.Hence its name is “The Purple Forbid

28、den City”,usually “The Forbidden City”.Para 2 Now known as the Palace Museum,it is to the north of Tiananmen Square.Rectangular in shape,it is the worlds largest palace complex and covers 74 hectares.Surrounded by a 52-meter-wide moat and a 10-meter-high wall are more than 8,700 rooms.The wall has a

29、 gate on each side.Opposite the Tiananmen Gate,to the north is the Gate of Divine Might (Shenwumen),which faces Jingshan Park.The distance between these two gates is 960 meters,while the distance between the east and west gates is 750 meters.There are unique and delicately structured towers on each

30、of the four corners of the curtain wall.These afford views over both the palace and the city outside.Para 3 The Forbidden City is divided into two parts.The southern section,or the Outer Court was where the emperor exercised his supreme power over the nation.The northern section,or the Inner Court w

31、as where he lived with his royal family.Until 1924 when the last emperor of China was driven from the Inner Court,fourteen emperors of the Ming dynasty and ten emperors of the Qing dynasty had reigned here.Having been the imperial palace for five centuries,it houses numerous rare treasures and curio

32、sities.Listed by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1987,the Palace Museum is now one of the most popular tourist attractions world-wide.Para 4 Construction of the palace complex began in 1407,the 5th year of the Yongle reign of the third emperor (Emperor Chengzu,Zhu Di)of the Ming dynasty.

33、It was completed fourteen years later in 1420,and then the capital city was moved from Nanjing to Beijing the next year.It was said that a million workers including one hundred thousand artisans were driven into the long-term hard labor.Stone needed was quarried from Fangshan,a suburb of Beijing.It

34、was said a well was dug every fifty meters along the road in order to pour water onto the road in winter to slide huge stones on ice into the city.Huge amounts of timber and other materials were freighted from faraway provinces.Para 5 Ancient Chinese people displayed their very considerable skills i

35、n building the Forbidden City.Take the grand red city wall for example.It has an 8.6 meters wide base reducing to 6.66 meters wide at the top.The angular shape of the wall totally frustrates attempts to climb it.The bricks were made from white lime and glutinous rice while the cement is made from gl

36、utinous rice and egg whites.These incredible materials make the wall extraordinarily strong.Para 6 Since yellow is the symbol of the royal family,it is the dominant color in the Forbidden City.Roofs are built with yellow glazed tiles; decorations in the palace are painted yellow; even the bricks on

37、the ground are made yellow by a special process.However,there is one exception.Wenyuange,the royal library,has a black roof.The reason is that it was believed black represented water then and could extinguish fire.Para 7 The Imperial Palace is the treasury of valuable cultural relics.Now,some museum
