Unit 6 Here are tips for finding a job.Lead in Task 11I think many people prefer to find a job that they really like. After all, most people want to enjoy themselves rather than have plenty of money without a sense of achievement and happiness. On the other hand, some people may choose a well-paid job instead of a job close to their heart out of financial considerations. If one is in serious financial difficulty, one can hardly afford the luxury of a dream job2I think it is. Although many employers lay emphasis on candidates educational background and work experience, some believe that candidates character is equally important for a successful career. For example, in contemporary society, many projects require the coordination of a group of people rather than a single persons efforts. Therefore, a good team player is often welcome. 3To start with, the interviewers may ask you about your education to see if you have the basic knowledge required for the job you are applying for. Perhaps most of them will ask you about your work experience in this field to see if you have the necessary skills for the job you have in mind. They may also ask about your character, weaknesses and strengths to find out what kind of person you are. They may even ask you something that is not directly related to the job. Your answers tend to show your intelligence level and communication skillsBasic listening practice CDACBListening in Task 11-7ABAABAAListening in Task 2 1-5BCCADListening in Task 3 1-5CAACBLets talk Task 1 Correct answer (1) 900 (2) customer calls (3) 70 (4) human resources (5) supported (6) customer-facing (7) place (8) two (9) right people (10) realistic Lets talk Task 2 (3) Candidates have a telephone interview that would last somewhere in the region of 15 minutes. (2) Candidates come to have a tour of the centre. They get to see the role, see how it feels, and feel the culture of the company. (1) Candidates complete an application form. (4) Candidates have a two-hour assessment consisting of a role-play which looks at their customer service ability and a competency interview. Lets talk Task 3 1T-Mobile is a subsidiary of Deutsche Telecom; it is Deutsche Telecoms global mobile phone operation. There are 900 people working at the companys call centre; 760 of them are employed in handling customer calls and they are managed by 70 team managers and 10 operations managers. Generally speaking, I prefer to work for a large company because it often has a good reputation, is less likely to go bankrupt, ensures you a fairly stable job, and sometimes gives you a good salary. But I may not say no to a small company if I can assume more responsibilities, have more opportunities for career development and promotion, or receive a higher salary.2In a role-play the company recruiters can look at the candidates abilities and potential. To prepare for such a role-play, basically I can do two things. To begin with, I will make a list of the tasks required by the job as well as a list of the things I can say and do in order to demonstrate my customer service ability. Moreover, I can ask friends and family members to take part in a role-play with me so that I can become familiar with the situation and find out my problems. I can also video tape the role-play to further identify problems and make improvement.Further listening and speaking Further listening Task 1 Correct answer (1) coast (2) impressed (3) shipping company (4) cargo (5) communication skills (6) essential (7) asset (8) team spirit (9) her age (10) her parents Further listening and speaking Further listening Task 21-5BAABATask 31-5CCBADFurther listening and speaking Viewing and speaking Task 1 Correct answer (1) selection (2) pressure (3) marketing (4) interview (5) business (6) nervous (7) laugh (8) redundant (9) difficult (10) sacking Further listening and speaking Viewing and speaking Task 21The interviewer must make the interviewee feel at ease because otherwise he or she might end up in hiring someone who is completely wrong for the business. I might do the following to make myself less nervous in an interview: I will close my eyes for a while and take a deep breath. Also, Ill try to smile a bit to make myself feel better. Before the interview, I should get fully prepared. I will familiarize myself with the usual questions and appropriate answers. Also, I will collect a lot of information about the company I want to join and its requirements for the advertised position. When I am equipped with sufficient information, I will feel more confident and less nervous.I wont treat the interview too seriously. Even if I fail, it does not mean the end of the world, and I still have further opportunities elsewhere.I might have simulated interviews with my fellow students or family members. When I become more familiar with the interview procedure, I will be less afraid.2They should be very compassionate because it is someones livelihood that they are dealing with. And if possible, they could write a new CV for the laid-off people to help them find a new job. I may try to encourage the laid-off workers by saying, You are so intelligent; you will find a better job sooner or later. If possible, I will recommend the laid-offs to other companies3To begin with, I will calm down and think about my weaknesses and ways to overcome them. I can think about my strengths and how I can make use of them in my future job-seeking. I will update my rsum and try to find a new job. I will call my friends and relatives to see if any of them can help me land a job. If I cant find a suitable job now, I will consider a training course that can update my skills so that I will become more competitive in the job market.TestCBCDCCorrect answer(1)ice (2)Examples(3)parking(4)response(5)provide(6)impression(7)ages (8)If this is the place where you would be working, they would automatically be worried that you will be late for work everyday(9)They might be historical questions regarding your previous employment or education (10)Make a statement, then support it by giving an example of a situation and how you handled itCBACDDABCBCAADCUnit 7 Why dont we start a business of our own?Lead in Task 1L略Basic listening practice1-5 BCABCListening in Task 1 Correct answer (1) reception (2) new connections (3) distributed (4) green hand (5) business cards (6) talk business (7) card (8) follow up (9) more ground (10) piece of cake Listening in Task 21-5CBBADListening in Task 3 Correct answer (1) technology-oriented (2) higher (3) returns (4) options (5) Venture capital (6) cash (7) founders (8) business ideas (9) potential (10) intellectual property protection (11) 100 percent / 100% (12) creators (13) stock (14) $16.5 million (15) failure rate Lets talk Task 1 Correct answer (1) rapid growth (2) shock (3) large (4) shot up (5) hard (6) opportunities (7) different (8) stable (9) money (10) own Lets talk Task 21He thought there were not enough opportunities to use all his abilities because Samsung is a massive organization. It has no strategic issues, no financial issues and no managerial issues.3It depends. If the acquiring company is an economically strong one and makes us a good offer, I would be only too glad to see the proposed takeover. Some people smoke just because all those around them smoke. Some young people even think smoking is cool. Smoking is harmful to ones health. It can lead to many diseases. Long-term smoking may result in lung diseases, or even lung cancer. Also, some heavy smokers may suffer from breathing difficulty, high blood pressure, heart trouble, amongst other disease. Moreover, cigarettes cost money. 2Yes. The family-planning or one-child policy is one of the reasons. Whats more, the rapid economic development, continuous increases in living standards and the improved medical service have all contributed to the increasing average lifespan. This can cause a lot of problems. Few young people have to support more old people. The larger elderly population requires more social security spending, special public facilities such as homes for the elderly and nursing homes, and more medical services, which are a heavy burden on society. To deal with the challenges, we must develop our economy to accumulate more funds so as to establish a sound social security system and old-age insurance system. We also need to establish more public facilities for senior citizens. 3Poverty may lead to many problems. Because of a shortage of money, sick people cant afford to go to the hospital, children cant afford to go to school, and some jobless people live far below the poverty line. Worse still, some needy people may become so desperate that they hate society and commit crimes or suicide. Poverty can be eliminated by generating more employment, raising the level of education, drawing upon the resources of every social institutions, etc. 4Before unemployed people can find a new job, their basic living standard should be met. Generally speaking, most people prefer to find a job rather than live on a handout. So it is important for them to be trained for reemployment. The government should offer training programs to update their skills so that they will become competitive in the job market again.Basic listening practice CCBADListening in Task 1BACCDListening in Task 2 CDCBCListening in Task 3 Correct answer (1) 49 (2) first birthday (3) health care systems (4) reduce (5) expenses (6) increasing (7) lower (8) faster (9) education (10) reduce poverty (11) more opportunities (12) live better (13) social ladder Lets talk Task 1 Correct answer (1) easier (2) loneliness (3) passed away (4) brain (5) health problems (6) younger (7) doctor (8) assumption (9) history (10) attitudes Lets talk Task 21Bereavement.
