the vessel should report the pilot station about the vessels particular information, such as the ships length、loa(length overall)、eta(estimated of arrival)、etd(estimated of departure)、to make sure which side should the pilot ladder be rigged, call sign、ships name and so on. 2. please briefly explain why it is important to exchange information with the pilot. because the pilot needs to know which vessel need the pilot? how to identify the vessel? and which side the pilot ladder should be rigged? exchange the ships eta (estimated of arrival)、etd(estimated of departure) will help the pilot to know 3. describe what are some of the personal and professional qualifications required to be a pilot? would you be well suited for this job? to be a pilot, the certificate for advanced fire-fighting training, the certificate for radar observation and plotting and radar simulator, the certificate for arpa simulator, the seafarers identity document are needed, in addition, there are also many other professional qualifications, so i think i am not suite for this job.questions and answers1. how can a ship get in touch with a port authority before her arrival? before her arrival, the ship can use the vhf to get in touch with the port authority.2. what should an officer report to the pilot station before her arrival? before her arrival, the officer should report the ships name/ the ships eta/ etd to the pilot station 3. what kind of information is usually provided by pilot station? the pilot station need provide the pilots eta /the pilot boarding side and so on.4. you are about to enter a fairway and you want to relay your intention to the vts. using a standard message marker and a phrase, what should you say? intention: i will enter the fairway.chapter three mooring and unmooring operationstopics and expressions s1. describe the normal procedure for berthing and unberthing.first of all, before berthing and unberthing, the officer on watch should report to the msa, then, the third officer and captain should in charge of the bridge, the chief officer should in charge of the ships bow and the second officer should in charge of the ships stern, further more, the ships anchor aweigh, all mooring lines let go, the vessel start to leave.2. describe the normal procedure for anchoring. first of all, before anchoring, the officer on watch should report to the msa to apply the anchoring position, then, the third officer and captain should in charge of the bridge, the chief officer should in charge of the ships bow and the second officer should in charge of the ships stern, further more, the ships anchors be prepared, the anchors start to let go.chapter four cargo worktopic presentation1. describe the preparation of the ships holds.the ships officer must check the stowage plan; keep the ships holds clean and clear, if the hold is not clean, the ships officer should find somebody to clean the hold and make its full preparation to load the cargo. cargo gears shall be prepared and checked. holds shall be opened.2. describe the procedures of carrying dangerous cargo on board.if a shipper wants to ship dangerous goods on board, he should provide the following information to carrier: the packing of the cargo, classes and un no. he is also required to provide quantities or pieces of the cargo to be loaded, nature, stowage factors, separation requirements, destination, etc.in many countries, dangerous cargoes handling must be under the supervision of officers from msa. dangerous goods should be stowed away from engine room and should be loaded at last and discharged firstly. during voyage, close attention shall be paid to them. 3. describe the procedures of cargo stowage.the ships officer must first of all make out a stowage plan from the loading lists. the loading lists give the quantity, description, backing, marks and members, destination, and other details of all the shipments offered for the contemplated voyage. the vessels chief officer is held responsible for proper stowage of his cargo. typically, stevedore men stow the cargo according to the stowage plan.questions and answers1. could you please describe the nature of general cargo?yes i can, general cargo is made up of an infinite variety of goods and can be classified according to its characteristics. it can be divided into containerized, non-containerized and refrigerated cargo.2. could you please say something about bulk cargo?yes i can, generally, bulk cargo is unpacked cargo and is of the same or a similar kind or nature, like coal, grains and so on.3. how are the loading and unloading operations of crude oil carried out?the loading and unloading operation of crude oil carried out according to the procedures which are made by chief officer.4. can you list any dry bulk cargoes and tell how they are handled?yes i can, such as canvas sling suitable for lifting bagged cargo, chain sling suitable for heavy slender cargoes, and so on.5. where heavier loads should be placed?the heavier loads should be placed on deck.6. what kind of cargo gears and equipment are there on board the ship you have served on?there are canvas sling, chain sling, derrick, and so on.7. what does a confined space refer to?confined space refers to the space that it is not allowed to place certain objects on such place.8. what precautions should be taken before entering the enclosed space?before entering an enclosed space, a competent person should undertake a preliminary assessment of the risk that the atmosphere might be toxic, flammable or oxygen-deficient. if he find the risk is insufferable, he should ventilate the enclosed space adequately and wear breathing apparatus before entering the enclosed space.9. how many categories are imo cargoes classified into? please provide details.the imo cargoes are classified into nine categories. for examples: class 1: explosives; class 3: flammable liquids; class 4: flammable solids; class 8: corrosives. and so on.10. could you give any description on cargo papers?yes i can, the loading list and the cargo stowage plan are two kinds of cargo papers.chapter five navigation at seatopic presentation 1. list some position fixing methods used in coastal waterthere are many kinds of position fixing methods used in coastal water, such as dead reckoning position fixing method, gps fixing method, radar fixing method , land based objects fixing method and so on.2. describe your action when risk of collision exists.when the risk of collision exists, we should take the avoid collision action immediately, these actions should be taken early, and with enough space distance, we also need reduce our ships speed and control the ships maneuvering operation, and alter course with ample course. 3. brief the relieving officer on what is going on in the open sea.the relieving officer usually goes on the bridge 15 minutes in advance for preparations and adaptation to vision in the open sea. he comes to know the ships surroundings and environment before taking over. during the night shift, the relieving officer read the night standing order written by the master and signs it. after taking over a shift, the relieving officer usually check ships position and course and so on.4. give some examples on the importance of keeping watch on vhf.keep watch on vhf is very important, when using vhf set; during ship-to-ship communications, the ship called should indicate the channel on which further transmissions should take place. the calling ship should acknowledge before changing channel. distress calls or messages designated on channel 16 have absolute priority over all other communication. every ship should always keep a listening watch on channel 16.answer the following questions1. what are the duties of watch-keeping when underway?the officer on watch keeps watch on bridge in no circumstances leave the bridge until properly relieved. he has full knowledge of safety and navigational equipment and makes full use of them. he should be acquaintance with the handling characteristics of the ship, and avoid collision complying with the rules of colreg72 concerned.2. describe advantages of various tools or technologies for a proper lookout.if properly used, hazards and ships have collision danger can be defected in long distance by radar and exact estimate of the visibility is possible when radar is used to determined the objects in vicinity and also the effect of collision prevention can be checked by radar. visual lookout is more reliable if in short distance, and is even more reliable in restrict visibility. both lookout by visual and by navigation aids are possible at all times especially in restrict visibility. they all have their own advantages.3. describe the proper way of using vhf.when using a vhf set; the lowest transmitter power necessary for satisfactory communication should be used. standard marine communication phrases should be used in communication. distress calls or messages designated on channel 16 have absolute priority over all other communication. every ship should always keep a listening watch on channel 16.4. when you request the receiver to remain on channel 16 in vhf communication, what do you say?stand by on vhf channel 16.5. how to rectify the mistake in maritime vhf communication?first i should say mistake, then follows the content.6. how to give an emphasis on the important part of a message in maritime vhf communication?i should repeat the important part message in maritime vhf communication.7. besides the collision risks, what else should you monitor on watch in reduced visibility?the performance of radar, navigation lights condition, communicates through vhf, the maneuverability of the ship.8. why is record keeping a necessary part of watch keeping?because of the records can be used as the legal document.9. apart from those for navigation safety, what else should you do on an anchor watch?on an anchor watch, apart from those for navigation safety, i need check the anchor position on chart, under the restricted visibility; i should sound the fog signals and so on.10. describe the bridge shift change?i usually go on the bridge 15 minutes in advance for preparations and adaptation to night vision. after taking over a shift, i usually check ships position and course and so on.chapter six marine vhf radiotelephone communicationtopic presentation 1. describe how to cancel the false alert.when false alert happen, it is very important to cancel the false alert, if the false alert is not canceled in time, it may cause serious accident, for example, the search and rescue operation may cause financial cost. there are many ways to cancel the false alert, such as i can use vhf dsc to cancel the false alert, and i also can use the vhf communication to cancel the false alert, and so on.2. describe some precautions to be taken during medical assistance by helicopterduring medical assistance, before the helicopter assistance arrive, we need take some precautions for the preparation, a portable fire-fighting extinguisher is needed in case of the fire happen when the helicopter land our vessel, two crewmembers should stand by in case of the emergency situation occur, and the master should send the officer to pick the helicopter medical assistance member up, and so on.3. describe the procedures of search and rescue operations.a coast radio station receiving any distress call or message shall:immediately informs the appropriate rescue co-ordination centre or rescue sub-centre;re-broadcast to the extent necessary to inform ships on one or more of the international distress frequencies or on any other appropriate frequency; precede such re-broadcasts with the appropriate automatic alarm signals unless this has already been done; take such subsequent action as decided by the competent authority.rescue co-ordination centers and rescue sub-centers shall, immediately upon receipt of information concerning a vessel in a state of emergency, evaluate such information and determine the phase of emergency and the extent of operation required.4. tell something on how to broadcast urgency messages through vhffirst i should say pan-pan three times ,then say attention all ships two times. for example, this is m/v white snow white snow, pan-pan white snow alfa lima monkey india, and reports my position: latitude 22 degrees 04 minutes north longitude 127 degrees 08minutes east then say my main engine is breakdown. i require tug assistance. finally say over.answer the following questions1. can you describe homing signals on board?yes, i can. for example, audible morse distress signals “sos”, signal lamp, signal flare and so on.2. how can you get a comprehensive source of information on maritime communication?i can get the comprehensive source of information from some kinds equipment such as ais and so on.3. how do you spell the name the ship mercator?mercator4. what is iamsar stand for?international maritime satellite5. what does rcc stand for?rescue coordination center6. can you list any search patterns? yes. there are expanding square search pattern, sector search pattern, parallel track search pattern, ship/aircraft coordinated search pattern.7. when should you give the name of the called station three times?it is the first call that the ship needed.8. why should you learn to use smcp as developed by imo?because, the smcp is the standard maritime communication phases, it is very useful especially when different country ship encounter with each other. chapter seven incident responsetopic presentation 1. describe procedures that can be adopted to ensure security onboard before departure.before the vessel departure, the main purpose is to search the ship thoroughly for preventing stowaway and smuggling, the ship security officer should check each holds, every deck, even every corners to make sure there are no other person except the crewmembers, and check the security related equipment work normal, and also to make sure there is no dangers threats on board.2. describe the main responsibilities of a ship security officer on board.undertaking regular security inspections of the ship to ensure that appropriate security measures are maintained; maintaining and supervising the implementation of the ship security plan, in coordination with the company security officer and the relevant port facility security officer; co-ordinating the security aspects of the handling of cargo and ships stores with other shipboard personnel and with the relevant port facility security officer(s); reporting to the company security officer any deficiencies and non-conformities identified during internal audits, periodic reviews, security inspections and verifications of compliance and implementing any cor
