You are asked to evaluate and analyze the perspectives; to state and develop your own perspective; and to explain the relationship between your perspective and those given. Your score will not be affected by the perspective you take on the issue.Sample promptIntelligent MachinesMany of the goods and services we depend on daily are now supplied by intelligent, automated machines rather than human beings. Robots build cars and other goods on assembly lines, where once there were human workers. Many of our phone conversations are now conducted not with people but with sophisticated technologies. We can now buy goods at a variety of stores without the help of a human cashier. Automation is generally seen as a sign of progress, but what is lost when we replace humans with machines? Given the accelerating variety and prevalence of intelligent machines, it is worth examining the implications and meaning of their presence in our lives.Perspective OnePerspective TwoPerspective ThreeWhat we lose with the replacement of people by machines is some part of our own humanity. Even our mundane daily encounters no longer require from us basic courtesy, respect, and tolerance for other people.Machines are good at low-skills, repetitive jobs, and at high-speed, extremely precise jobs. In both cases they work better than humans. This efficiency leads to a more prosperous and progressive world for everyone.Intelligent machines challenge our long-standing ideas about what humans are or can be. This is good because it pushes both humans and machines toward new, unimagined possibilities.官方题(二)Public Health and Individual FreedomPublic Health and Individual FreedomMost people want to be healthy, and most people want as much freedom as possible to do the things they want. Unfortunately, these two desires sometimes conflict. For example, smoking is prohibited from most public places, which restricts the freedom of some individuals for the sake of the health of others. Likewise, car emissions are regulated in many areas in order to reduce pollution and its health risks to others, which in turn restricts some peoples freedom to drive the vehicles they want. In a society that values both health and freedom, how do we best balance the two? How should we think about conflicts between public health and individual freedom?Perspective OnePerspective TwoPerspective ThreeOur society should strive to achieve the greatest good for the greatest number of people. When the freedom of the individual interferes with that principle, freedom must be restricted.Nothing in society is more valuable than freedom. Perhaps physical health is sometimes improved by restricting freedom, but the cost to the health of our free society is far too great to justify it.The right to avoid health risks is a freedom, too. When we allow individual behavior to endanger others, weve damaged both freedom and health. Unjust LawsUnjust laws are part of our legal systems. They can restrict our freedom and violate our privacy. People often question themselves whether they should obey those laws. Martin Luther King Jr famously called upon people to oppose the laws that were racially discriminatory and morally wrong. But how do we, as private citizens seeking justice, approach these unjust laws? What is the best way to act in order to ensure that the harms of these laws are minimized and that they are eventually repealed without bringing harm on oneself or those for whom one cares? These are questions worth examining both historically and in our modern society. Perspective OnePerspective TwoPerspective ThreePeople have rights to break the laws when the laws are unjust or immoral.Breaking the law should not be encouraged even if the laws themselves are problematic, because such action would result in chaos.Even if the laws are bad, people have reason to comply with them and seek other ways for change. To defy the laws openly would only bring danger and harm on themselves. CreativityCreativityExplore the role of creativity in the life of individual people (回忆版).Perspective OnePerspective TwoPerspective ThreeMany newly created things today defy tradition and ignore history. The best ideas are often based on proven methods and theories.People can live without creativity, but in order to thrive in the fast changing world, one needs to be creative.Creativity has no standard or set definition. It makes more sense for us to focus on other qualities that are productive and accurately defined. ChallengePhysical challenge may make you stronger. However, if you didnt consider your physical attributes, an arbitrary challenge may bring harm and risk. Sometimes challenge brings improvement. For instance, challenge ones mind could train ones thoughts. Each perspective suggests a particular way of thinking about challenge.Perspective one:Since life has provided us with enough challenges, over challenge could drive people stressed and unhappy. Perspective two: Through challenge, one can boost his potential and push his limits. Perspective three: Whether challenges bring us benefits or harm depends on specific situation so we should have the insight to recognize them. MasteryResearchers claim that it takes 10,000 hours of study, practice and repetition of a particular skill to truly attain mastery. Thats the equivalent of practicing something a musical instrument, a second language, a sport, etc. for 8 hours a day, everyday, for about three and a-half years. Given the level commitment required, it is worth considering the value and practicality of mastering a complex skill.Perspective OneDedication to goals gives purpose and meaning to life. The persistence and determination put forth allow us to develop into stronger people and is a reward in itself.Perspective TwoMastering a complex skill is worth the effort for some, but most people need variety and fun in their lives. It is more important to maintain a well-rounded and relaxing lifestyle.Perspective ThreeFind something you are good at and stick to it. By default, you will eventually achieve mastery without requiring special character traits or effort.官方题(七)12月12日北美题 Tech free time Perspectives (回忆版):Perspective1: Technology defined us as modern people;Perspective2: Some tech free time is essential to restore our true selves. Then we have time to explore the real world; Perspective3: Most people cannot stay away from their digital devices, so they have little time with livelihood and family connection. 官方题(九)12月12日 新加坡Being wise and determining新加坡题目和本月sat写作题目certainty and to be wise惊人的一致,sat也曾考过uncertainty。 Creativity and ImitationCreativity and ImitationCreativity is valued by modern society. It is regarded as the driving force for social progress, and all the inventions and technological advances are considered the results of creativity. However, someone holds that nothing is created, and everything is built upon the previous achievements. Both the present and the future are based upon inheritance. So which one do you think of deciding the social progress?Perspective OnePerspective TwoPerspective ThreeCreativity decides the progress of human civilization. In a sense, creativity is equal to technology because almost all developments in technology are the products of creativity, which propels economic prosperity.Nothing is totally created by human beings. We are heirs of nature and our predecessors, and all our achievements are based on imitation. For example, technological developments in bionics derive from animals or plants. Besides, many creations are just the development of the previous ones. It is imitation we need to facilitate social advance.Creativity and imitation are inseparable with each other and play an equal role. Every creation is the product of creative transformation or improvement of earlier things. What we need is the ability to find new direction from past and present, take advantage of the heritage, and improve it for a better use for the future. Human civilization relies in both inheritance and innovation. The question of how society progresses nowadays becomes one that pertains to the determining factor in human social advancement, opinions on which are divided between creativity and imitation. Perspective One and Perspective Two resort to these two factors contributions respectively to technology developments and/or creations and consequently significance to social progress, while lose sight of the interaction between the two parts. As Perspective Three contends, it is the combined force of creativity and imitation that pushes forward human society vigorously and incessantly.Creativity plays an important role in technological innovations, which stays in accordance with Perspective Ones argument that creativity is productive of technology improvements ranging from general revolutions down to subtle ameliorations. Both of the industrial revolutions have massively boosted the economy, in whose durations creations took place in abundance due to unprecedented thriving of human creativity. Were it not for the ground breaking introduction of multi-spindle spinning frame to weaving machines and steam power to engines during the first Industrial Revolution and the inventions employing electricity in the second Industrial Revolution, human society would not have been fundamentally changed. Absent the assistance of advanced technologies and equipment, human beings would still be groping in darkness with mind innocent of greater knowledge and finer manners than what is within the capacity of cavemen. Imitation constitutes an integral part to technological innovations since human beings have successfully improved their living conditions and ushered in one era of cutting-edge technologies after another through learning from nature and other species living therein. This stands in agreement with Perspective Two that human beings have greatly benefited from inheritance of natures fortune and former achievements by our predecessors. By way of applying biological principles to engineering, countless bionic mechanisms and biomimetic products have been designed and manufactured. Sharkskin swimsuits after the outer skin of sharks, Velcro after burdock burrs, bullet trains after kingfishers, turbines after whale fins, dustproof paint after lotus petals, and the list goes further on. Rudimentary knowledge and imitation based thereon of our environment and other creatures provide innovations with a foundation to make consequent adaptations to in order to better accommodate human needs. On account of the significance of the two factors mentioned above, it should not be overlooked that the cooperation of creativity and imitation as is pointed out in Perspective Three, and their influences on one another has been occupyin
