While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You wont feel any immediate effects, but if you sit for long periods of time its important that you take note of how long you have your legs crossed for. You shouldnt have your legs crossed for more than 15 minutes, and its important that you get up and walk around at least once every hour.Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. Ideally, its best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip width apart, on the floor, but its not easy to maintain perfect posture all day at the office. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic(骨盆的) bones to rotate. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck and spine, this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck. You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your feet and legs get tingly or have the feeling of being asleep. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other it causes pressure on the veins and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness and/or temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.1. What does the underlined word “tingly” (in paragraph 4) mean?A. a slight stinging feeling B. a clear ringing soundC. a pleasant warm feeling D. a strong excitement feeling2. According to the study, what influence does sitting with your legs crossed have on your health?increasing your blood pressure neck and back painpressure on the veins and nerves permanent nerve damageA. B. C. D. 3. What is the purpose of this passage?A. To increase peoples knowledge of sitting with their legs crossed.B. To introduce the bad influences that sitting with their legs crossed has on people.C. To help people form the habit of sitting with their legs.D. To advocate getting rid of sitting with their legs.【答案】1. A 2. D 3. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other it causes pressure on the veins and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness and/or temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet. 故选A。 根据文章第二段第一句sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. 此时,要注意一些转折词,如but, yet, however, although, in spite of, by contrast, on the contrary等。 BMicrosoft has developed a new smartphone app that interprets eye signals and translates them into letters, allowing people with ALS(渐冻症)to communicate with others from a phone. The GazeSpeak app combines a smartphones camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time and convert them into letters, words and sentences. For people suffering from ALS also known as motor neurone(神经元)disease, eye movement can be the only way to communicate. “Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS or other motor disabilities are expensive, not constant under sunlight, and require frequent readjustment and considerable, relatively fixed systems,” said Xiaoyi Zhang, a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology.“To reduce the drawbackswe created GazeSpeak, an eye-gesture communication system running on a smartphone, and is designed to be low-cost, constant, portable and easy to learn.”The app is used by the listener by pointing their smartphone at the speaker. A chart stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make for communication. The label shows four grids(方格) of letters, which each correspond to a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids they want the letters belong to. The artificial intelligence algorithm(计算程序) is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say.Zhangs research, Smartphone-Based Gaze Gesture Communication for People with Motor Disabilities, is set to be presented at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in May.4. How does the new smartphone app help people with ALS?A. By connecting its camera with sufferers appearance.B. By communicating with people directly with a camera.C. By changing eye movements into detailed written information.D. By looking into the eyes of the sufferers.5. Why did the researchers develop GazeSpeak?A. GazeSpeak will have fewer disadvantages.B. Current systems cant function effectively.C. GazeSpeak can be properly used in the medical field.D. Current systems can increase the risk of motor disabilities.6. What can we know according the text?A. Sufferers eye movements are determined by GazeSpeak.B. Current systems are solid but costly for sufferers.C. GazeSpeak has helped people a lot.D. GazeSpeak hasnt been practically on the market.【答案】4. C 5. A 6. The GazeSpeak app combines a smartphones camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time and convert them into letters, words and sentences. 根据文章第四段“To reduce the drawbackswe created GazeSpeak, an eye-gesture communication system running on a smartphone, and is designed to be low-cost, constant, portable and easy to learn.” Zhangs research, Smartphone-Based Gaze Gesture Communication for People with Motor Disabilities, is set to be presented at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in May. D。COn the day the tornado hit, there was no indication of any coming severe weather. The first alert my husband, Jimmy and I got came around 9 p.m., from some scrolling text on the TV Jimmy was watching. He ran upstairs to find me in our third-floor bedroom, and we changed the channel to our local Pensacola, Florida, station. No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us. The wind began to roar, the bones of the house shook, and the power went out. We need to reach the strongest placethe closet on the first floor, which is wedged underneath a brick staircase.I didnt know how or if we would make it down the steps. It felt as if there were no floor underneath me as the wind lifted me off my feet. I held the banister tightly and tried to move forward, but this intense pressure held me in place, with everything rattling and moving. As we reached the last flight of steps, our front door blew out and the back wall of the house followed suit and tore off into the darkness outside. By the time I reached the closet, the tornado had been over us for about a minute. Jimmy pushed me down to the closet floor, but he couldnt get inside himself because of the wind. I grasped Jimmys arm, trying to bring Jimmy with the never-fully-shut door. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay.“Hold on! Hold on!” he yelled. But there was nothing in this closet to hold on to. All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies. I thought he was gone. And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldnt believe it was over. The storm lasted four minutes. In that time, four of the twelve town houses in our unit were completely destroyed. Of the houses left standing, ours suffered the most damage. Amazingly, none of us were severely injured and we didnt lose any neighbor.7. The occurrence of the tornado was confirmed through _.A. some scrolling textB. the local Pensacola Florida stationC. a relativeD. observing the top of their house8. Why couldnt Jimmy get inside?A. Because he had to push his wife.B. Because he has run out of all the strengths.C. Because the door didnt shut.D. Because the wind was too strong.9. Which word can best describe the authors feeling during the tornado?A. gratefulB. frightenedC. upsetD. unexpected10. What can we infer form the passage?A. The tornadoes took place at midnight.B. People in tornadoes like to lift off their feet in the movie.C. There was a bay in front of the couples house.D. The disaster caused property loss but no death.【答案】7. B 8. D 9. B 10.
