In 1869, the Smiley family purchased an area of land about 100 miles north of New York City. Over time, some of their property and many of the surrounding landscapes became the Mohonk Preserve, which has since grown to 8,000 acres and attracts visitors and rock climbers. But the Mohonk Preserve also has a long scientific legacy. In the 1930s, Dan Smiley, a descendent of the original owners, began keeping track of the plants and animals that lived in the area.Megan Napoli is a research ecologist with the Mohonk Preserve in New York. She thinks Smileys efforts produced a rare longterm data set of observations, which is useful for studying the impacts of climate change. For instance, other research has shown that songbirds are migrating north earlier and earlier in the spring. Its important for the birds to arrive at the proper time in the spring, because they need to time their arrival with the insects emergence. So they need to be here to establish their nesting sites and lay their eggs. Once the eggs hatch, they have their baby birds, so they need to time it when the insects are most abundant.Napoli has begun analyzing about 76,000 observations of songbird migration dates collected by Smiley and his team to see if they, too, show that climate change has altered the timing of migrations. Her results suggest that they do.Napoli found that shortdistance migrants that spend their winters in the southern US. now arrive an average of eleven days earlier than they did in the 1930s. Longdistance migrants that overwinter in the tropics arrive roughly a week earlier. Napoli presented her results at a recent meeting of the Ecological Society of America in Portland, Oregon.Meanwhile, who knows how many other longterm, personal data collections like Smileys are out there, waiting to be discovered and to help improve official attempts to track the planets changes. Over time, some of their property and many of the surrounding landscapes became the Mohonk Preserve, which has since grown to 8,000 acres and attracts visitors and rock climbers. 句中“which has since grown to 8,000 acres and attracts visitors and rock climbers”为which引导的非限制性定语从句,which在从句中作主语。 1What do we know about Dan Smiley?AHe lived in New York City.BHe was a scientific researcher.CHe owned the Mohonk Preserve.DHe kept a record of wildlife. 根据第二段第二句“In the 1930s, Dan Smiley, a descendent of the original owners, began keeping track of the plants and animals that lived in the area”可知,20世纪30年代,这个地区原来的主人的一个后人Dan Smiley记录了该地区的动植物信息,故D项正确。2What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?AThe birds birth. BThe birds arrival.CThe nest building. DThe insect appearance. 根据第四段第一句“Its important for the birds to arrive at the proper time in the spring, because they need to time their arrival with the insects emergence”可知,对于鸟类来说,在春天适时到达很重要,因为它们需要用昆虫的出现来确定它们到达的时间。又结合本段中的“Once the eggs hatch, they have their baby birds, so they need to time it when the insects are most abundant”可知,一旦这些蛋孵化,它们就有了幼鸟,所以它们需要在昆虫数量最多的时候安排时间到达。 3What does Megan Napoli think of Smileys longterm record?AIt has affected the birds migration.BIt challenges the previous research.CIt has changed official attitudes.DIt is of great value to her research. 根据第三段第二句“She thinks Smileys efforts produced a rare longterm data set of observations, which is useful for studying the impacts of climate change”可知,Megan Napoli认为Smiley收集的长期观测数据对研究气候变化的影响非常有用,故D项正确。4What can we learn from Napolis research?AIt is totally based on Smileys longterm notes.BScientists have to rely on more personal data.CClimate change affects birds migration time.DIt contributes greatly to other personal research. Many Americans think of driverless cars as a futuristic technology that will revolutionize travel in cities and along state highways. But recent experiments are proving that autonomous vehicles also have the potential to improve the quality of life for millions of Americans underserved by traditional modes of transportation, such as the elderly and disabled, so long as lawmakers make smart policies that pave the way for innovation. A retirement community in San Jose, Calif., which has been transformed by a small fleet of driverless taxis, shows the potential of selfdriving cars to transform peoples lives. Built by a tech startup called Voyage, the modified Ford Fusions are currently limited to a twomile road, but residents are already having the benefits of these autonomous vehicles, which allow them to participate in social activities they would otherwise be unable to enjoy simply because they could not get to them. When the trial run finally expands to 15 miles of road, these residents whose average age is 76 will also have a convenient and reliable new way to appointments. As these cars continue to serve residents there, it is easy to understand why California is moving to simplify regulations for the industry. In Michigan, forwardthinking policies have the potential to unlock other hidden benefits of autonomous vehicles, especially for those with physical disabilities. The Michigan Disability Rights Coalition has strongly advocated for the development of this technology, saying that it could give people with disabilities greater opportunities in the workforce and enable them to lead more fulfilling, independent lives. Many recognize that autonomous vehicles will be the future of transportation, but it is too often overlooked that this future cannot arrive fast enough for millions of Americans who are forced to depend on others for daytoday travel. The policymakers should follow the lead of places like California and Michigan, and pass rules and regulations to unlock these hidden benefits of driverless cars. But recent experiments are proving that autonomous vehicles also have the potential to improve the quality of life for millions of Americans underserved by traditional modes of transportation, such as the elderly and disabled, so long as lawmakers make smart policies that pave the way for innovation. that引导宾语从句,其中to improve the quality of life for. modes of transportation作the potential的后置定语;underserved作millions of Americans的后置定语;so long as引导条件状语从句,条件状语从句中含有that引导的定语从句,修饰先行词policies,并在从句中作主语。 5Whats the attitude of most American people to the future of autonomous vehicles?ACurious. BDoubtful.CIndifferent. DOptimistic. 根据第四段最后一句中的“saying that it could give people with disabilities greater opportunities in the workforce and enable them to lead more fulfilling, independent lives”和最后一段第一句中的“Many recognize that autonomous vehicles will be the future of transportation”可知,许多人认识到自动驾驶汽车将是未来的交通工具,因此多数美国人对自动驾驶汽车的未来是持乐观态度的。故选D项。6What is the modified Ford Fusion?AA kind of autonomous vehicle.BA fleet of driverless taxis.CA road for driverless cars.DA retirement community. 根据第二段第二句中的“the modified Ford Fusions are currently limited to a twomile road, but residents are already having the benefits of these autonomous vehicles”可推知,the Ford Fusion是一种自动驾驶汽车,故选A项。7What are examples in California and Michigan to prove?ADriverless cars disadvantages.BGovernments right decisions.CBenefits to the aged and disabled.DThe regulations are forwardthinking. 8What does the author attempt to inform us in the last paragraph?AThe benefits of driverless cars have been fully unlocked.BRegulations should go hand in hand with driverless technology.CThe concept of autonomous vehicles has been widely recognized.DThe weak groups are often overlooked despite technology advances. 根据文章最后一段的最后一句“The policymakers should follow the lead of places like California and Michigan, and pass rules and regulations to unlock these hidden benefits of driverless cars”可知,作者想告诉我们政策制定者应该制定制度来发挥无人驾驶汽车的潜在好处,故选B项。. Learning to set goals plays an important role as your child starts to gain independence.
