AThe English language has a lot of words which can be used in many different ways and in many different expressions. One such example is the word matter. In fact, matter can mean just about anything. It could be one of the most useful words in the English language.Lets get to the heart of the matter a matter of principle. If someone says that you owe him $50, but you dont, a friend might say, “Well, you could pay him the $50. Its not that much money. Then you wont have to hear him say it anymore.” But if you do not owe him the money, do not pay him the money. Its a matter of principle. There is another way to use the word matter. But be careful with your choice of words. If you ask someone, “Whats the matter?”, it shows you are worried about the other person. But saying, “Whats the matter with you?” has a completely different meaning. And it usually sounds rude. In fact, when you say, “Whats the matter with you?”, you are suggesting that the person did something wrong or stupid.Another expression that could sound rude is to say, “It doesnt matter to me.” Here, it depends on the context,_and how you say it.Lets say you tell someone that a friend just got a big raise at work. That person answers with, “It doesnt matter to me.” Here, it means he or she does not care. And it sounds rude. But saying, “Oh, you pick where we eat dinner. It doesnt matter to me.” does not sound rude. In this situation, “it doesnt matter” shows you are easygoing. No matter how you look at it and what you say, matter is a very useful word. They are developed for a number of different reasons to fight disease, resist pests, improve nutrition, survive drought and are mainly found in our food supply in processed foods using corn, soybeans and as feed for farm animals. Are they safe? How do they affect the environment? Can they improve food security? Is the world better off with or without GM foods?Supporters of GM foods say that farmers who grow these crops are able to use fewer environmentally damaging farm chemicals. The increased output is important to feeding the worlds growing population. And many studies have shown that GM foods are safe to eat and that theres no actual evidence of any health risks. They also add that the foods have been thoroughly examined and have gained approval for eating from a wide variety of government and scientific bodies.Critics, however, are concerned that these foods have not been strictly tested and are potentially dangerous for both the environment and peoples health. They say farmers growing GM crops have actually increased their use of farm chemicals. And the widespread use of the crops, they say, has also led to an increase in weeds and insects that have resistance to farm chemicals. And, they argue, there is still no scientific evidence of the longterm safety of these foods.Four scientists recently took on those questions in a debate, facing off two against two on GM foods. In these Oxfordstyle debates, the team that gets the most people on its side by the end is the winner. Before the debate, the audience at the Kaufman Music Center in New York voted 32 percent in favor of GM foods, with 30 percent against and 38 percent undecided. Afterward, 60 percent agreed with GM foods, and 31 percent disagreed making the side arguing in favor of GM foods the winners of this debate. 5Whats the main purpose of Paragraph 1?ATo advertise GM foods.BTo show what GM foods are.CTo introduce the topic of the text.DTo explain why GM foods are developed. 6Whats the main focus of the debate?AThe necessity of producing GM foods.BWhether GM crops can help to avoid hunger.CWhether GM foods are scientifically examined.DGM foods effect on human health and the environment. 由第二段中的“use fewer environmentally damaging farm chemicals” “GM foods are safe to eat and that theres no actual evidence of any health risks”和第三段的“are concerned that these foods . environment and peoples health”可知,科学家争论的焦点是转基因食品对人类健康及环境的影响。7What do we know about the debate at the Kaufman Music Center?AThere were four votes for the debate.BAbout half of the audience had no idea about it.CIt was a facetoface debate between two and two.DThe winner of the debate was decided by the judges. 由第四段中的“Four scientists recently took on those questions in a debate, facing off two against two on GM foods.” 8What percentage of the audience supported the winner of the debate?A31 percent.B38 percent.C60 percent.D92 percent. 由最后一段中的“Afterward, 60 percent agreed with GM foods . making the side arguing in favor of GM foods the winners of this debate.” How parents can help children with reading skillsMaking sure that your children read well can help them perform better in school and increase their confidence in their ability to communicate well.
