at school and observing a childs class, also fail to help, according to the most recent study on the topic. The findings challenge a key principle of modern parenting(养育子女) where schools expect them to act as partners in their childrens education.Previous generations concentrated on getting children to school on time, fed, dressed and ready to learn.Kaith Robinson, the author of the study, said,“I really dont know if the public is ready for this but there are some ways parents can be involved in their kids education that lead to declines in their academic performance. One of the things that were consistently negative was parents help with homework.” Robinson suggested that may be because parents themselves struggle to understand the task.“They may either not remember the material their kids are studying now,or in some cases never learnt it themselves, but theyre still offering advice.”Robinson assessed parental involvement performance and found one of the most damaging things a parent could do was to punish their children for poor marks. In general, about 20% of parental involvement was positive, about 45% negative and the rest statistically insignificant.Common sense suggests it was a good thing for parents to get involved because “children with good academic success do have involved parents”,admitted Robinson. But he argued that this did not prove parental involvement was the root cause of that success.“A big surprise was that AsianAmerican parents whose kids are doing so well in school hardly involved. They took a more reasonable approach, conveying to their children how success at school could improve their lives.”1The underlined expression “parental involvement” in Paragraph 1 probably means .Aparents expectation on childrens health Bparents participation in childrens education Cparents control over childrens life Dparents plan for childrens future 2What is the major finding of Robinsons study?AModern parents raise children in a more scientific way.BPunishing kids for bad marks is mentally damaging.CParental involvement is not so beneficial as expected.DParents are not able to help with childrens homework.3The example of AsianAmerican parents implies that parents should .Ahelp children realize the importance of schoolingBset a specific life goal for their childrenCspend more time improving their own livesDtake a more active part in school managementBCANYOUIMAGINEHOWHARDITWOULDBETOREADSENTENCESLIKETHIS?Every one of us gets so used to punctuation marks that not many of us give them a second thought.Actually, the ancient Greeks wrote this way.The lack of punctuation marks probably didnt bother good readers, though. As they read, they just put pauses where they fit best. Also at this time, sentences switched directions.A sentence read from left to right. The next one read right to left, and then left to right again, etc. The ancient Romans sometimes punctuated like this:Theyputsomethingthatcanseparatewordsinasentence. The word punctuation actually comes from this idea and the Latin word punctum, which means a dot. When the 5th century arrived, there were just two punctuation marks:spaces and points. The spaces separated words while the points showed pauses in reading. Then in the 13th century,a printer named Aldus Manutius tried to standardize punctuation. He always used a period for a complete stop at the end of a sentence. He used a slash(/) to indicate a short pause.Over time, that slash was shortened and curled, and it became the modern comma(逗号)Since that time, other marks have enlarged the punctuation family. The exclamation mark(感叹号) comes from the Latin word io.It means “exclamation of joy”The question mark originally started out as the Latin word questio, meaning question.Eventually, scholars put it at the end of a sentence to show a question.Punctuation even keeps changing nowadays.New marks are coming into existence, and old punctuation marks are used in new ways.Take for example the “interrobang”This 1962 invention combines the question mark and exclamation mark for times when writers want both. For example,“She did what?!” or “How much did you pay for that dress?!” Obviously, the interrobang is not widely used or recognized yet,but its invention shows that English is not yet finished with its punctuation.4From the first paragraph,we can know that .Agood readers had trouble reading without punctuation marksBa sentence always read from left to right in ancient GreeceCancient Greeks switched the direction of punctuation marksDthe use of punctuation marks can date back to ancient times5The passage is developed .Aby time Bby spaceCby comparison Dby importance6We can learn from the passage that .Aancient Romans didnt use any punctuation marksBexclamation and question marks came from LatinCspaces and slashes were already used before the 5th centuryDAldus Manutius first started to use commas7What can be concluded from the last paragraph?AThe combination of two marks will not work.BIt takes time for people to accept new punctuation marks.COld punctuation marks need to be standardized.DPunctuation marks are still changing today.七选五(2017广东仲元中学月考)Living with a roommate can be a great experience as many roommates become lifelong friends. However, roommates living together under the same roof for a long time unavoidably conflict with each other. 8 To prevent this from happening to you, each conflict should be addressed in a productive, healthy way.1Set a time for discussion.Once conflicts occur, you need to set up a time to discuss the conflict. 9 They may think about any problems they want to discuss. It also allows for a better discussion as the both roommates will most likely enter the discussion fairly calm.2Make rules for discussion. Before discussing the actual conflicts, set up some rules to guide the discussion. For example, each roommate is allowed to air one problem at a time and the other roommate has a chance to respond to it before another one is brought up.Making rules beforehand can prevent a screaming match from breaking out. 10 3 11 You can use your discussion to point out to your roommates their great traits and specific things you like about them. While this wont solve the conflict,it can help your roommates be more understanding of your point of view and more willing to compromise.4Come up with a written roommate agreement.Once grievances(不满)have been aired by both parties you should develop a roommate agreement that is written down. This agreement should discuss what the rules are as well as what consequences exist for breaking them. For example, roommates having a conflict about overnight guests may compromise to allow overnight guests only on weekends with guests on weekdays being gone by 11 pm. 12 ATalk about your problems openly.BPoint out good things about roommates.CBeing honest can avoid unfriendly discussion.DThis provides both parties a chance for preparation.EAnd disaster can strike when a conflict never gets settled.FA consequence may be that the violator(违反者)pays 5 for breaking the rules.GThis is because both sides know they will have an opportunity to speak.答案解析高考高频单词与短语识记排查跟踪训练1cation4.scientist 5yourself6.for7.in8.spending9.for10.from阅读能力专练.阅读理解1B词义猜测题。根据第一段第二句中的“Other forms of parental involvement, including volunteering at school and observing a
