Bye!(Text 10)W:Have you all heard about the White House? Today were going to talk about the building that symbolizes the USA. Mr. Green, please.M:The White House is one of the most recognizable structures in the world. You cant say youve been to Washington D. C. if you havent seen the White House. Not every American president lives there. Though the Executive Mansion was begun in 1792 under the direction of George Washington, the structure was not completed until 1800, so ironically Washington never called it home. The White House is open to the public on weekdays from 10 am until noon. The building was torched by British troops in 1814, during the War of 1812, and the structural damage caused by the fire was repaired, but the sandstone walls outside were still black from the fire. The walls were then painted white, giving birth to the name the building now goes by. An act of Congress made it the official name in 1920. Every President has left his mark upon the White House, with Thomas Jefferson adding grass to the east and west wings, Andrew Jackson installing running water, and Harry Truman adding a porch. Bill Clintons addition to the White House was an indoor track. AImagine looking for your lost dog. You step into a cave. But instead of the dog, you find beautiful cave paintings. You see paintings of horses, deer, and bison that were drawn in black, brown, red and yellow. Your first question would probably be “Who did this?”This is what happened to four French boys in 1940. They found the Lascaux caves. The paintings the boys discovered in those caves are about 17,000 years old. They were drawn by the ancient people called CroMagnons.CroMagnons looked much like people of today. They used tools, such as fishing nets. But their art was extremely good. The main cave at Lascaux is called Great Hall of Bulls, which has a picture of bulls and horses in many colours. The largest animal is 18 feet long. There are smaller animals, such as bison, stags and a bear. There is also a strange spotted twohorned (两只角的) animal. To the left of the main cave are the most famous paintings that are the drawings of animals in many different colours. One painting is called Little Horses. On the ceiling are horses and cows. The most unusual sight may be in the Shaft of the Dead Man where there is a rhinoceros, a carefully drawn dead man, an injured bison and a bird. Why did CroMagnon artists do these beautiful drawings on cave walls? Did the drawings call upon some magic power? Did the CroMagnon people hope that the drawings would bring good luck? There is one thing the paintings seem to tell us. The CroMagnons were interested in the world. They looked at beauty and they understood it.21The author uses the word “you” in Paragraph 1 to _.Aattract readers attentionBmake it clear that this is a true storyCgive readers good directions to find the cavesDcompare modern people with CroMagnon people解析:选A推理判断题。 22What does the passage mainly tell us?AThe cave paintings are beautiful.BWho found the beautiful cave paintings.CThe Lascaux caves hold colourful ancient paintings.DDrawings of horses are on the walls of the Lascaux caves. 23The passage is most probably taken from _.Aa research paperBa cultural magazineCa science newspaperDa travel guide解析:选B文章出处题。 BIt is no wonder the village is the coldest permanently inhabited (有人居住的) settlement in the world with the average temperature for January standing at 50. Known as the “Pole of Cold”, the coldest ever temperature recorded in Oymyakon was 71.2. This is the lowest recorded temperature for any permanently inhabited location on Earth and the lowest temperature recorded in the Northern Hemisphere. Surprisingly, Oymyakon actually means “nonfreezing water” due to a nearby hot spring.Nothing grows there so people eat reindeer meat and horse meat. A single shop provides the towns bare necessities and the locals work as reindeerbreeders, hunters and icefisherman. Doctors say the reason the locals dont suffer from malnutrition (营养失调) is that their animals milk contains a lot of micronutrients.Unsurprisingly, locals are accustomed to the weather and unlike in other countries where heavy snow brings everything grinding_to_a_halt,_Oymyakons school only shuts if temperatures fall below 52.There are few modern conveniences in the village with many buildings still having outdoor toilets and most people still burn coal and wood for heat. When coal deliveries are irregular, the power station starts burning wood. If the power stops, the town shuts down in about five hours, and the pipes freeze and crack.Daily problems that come with living in Oymyakon include pen ink freezing, glasses freezing to peoples faces and batteries losing power. Locals are said to cave their cars running all day for fear of not being able to restart them. Even if there was coverage for mobile phone reception, the phones themselves would not work in such cold conditions.Another problem caused by the frozen temperatures is burying dead bodies, which can take anything up to three days. The earth must first have melted sufficiently in order to dig it, so a bonfire is lit for a couple of hours. Hot coals are then pushed to the side and a hole, several inches deep, is dug. The process is repeated for several days until the hole is deep enough to bury the coffin.24What can be implied from the first paragraph?AThe village is the coldest place in the world.BNo residents live permanently in the village.CVillagers there have to live with severe cold.DThe average temperature stands at 50 all year round. 根据文章第一段的“It is no wonder the village is the coldest permanently inhabited (有人居住的) settlement in the world with the average temperature”可知,那里的居民要忍受极低的温度。25What does the underlined phrase “grinding to a halt” probably mean in this passage? 根据文章第三段的“Oymyakons school only shuts if temperatures fall below 52”可知,画线短语意为“停止”。26Which of the following statements about this village is TRUE?ALocal children dont go to school because of the extreme cold.BPeople there live a hard and simple life with few modern conveniences.CThe extremely cold climate brings about great trouble to the daily life of the villagers.DThe name of this village Oymyakon suggests that its extremely cold here. 27What is the authors purpose of writing this passage?ATo attract more people to this village.BTo inform readers of this special village.CTo help solve problems the villagers are facing.DTo draw readers attention to poor people. CHere are three dream trips every traveler should experience:See the Northern LightsThere is no doubt that it is the greatest light show on Earth. By 2030 the number will have doubled and by 2050 it will top 5 million, according to forecasts. As a House of Lords committee report has suggested, the longer life could cause a series of “crises” in the public service not only in terms of health and social care, but for pensions, housing and employment. It is commonly believed that old age means an individual becomes a burden. That is understandable. Research suggests that while people are living longer, they are not automatically living so long with good health. Today most over85s have between three and six longterm conditions, including everything from heart disease and diabetes to dementia. It means they are more likely to end up in hospital. But there is growing evidence that with better planning by both the state and individual some of these can be avoided. If the elderly are given more support in the community, they will be more likely to stand a chance of remaining independent and out of hospital. In Torbay, for example, health and social care budgets have been combined, encouraging a better approach to caring for the elderly, resulting in a fall in hospital admissions.A report published by Age UK points out that while old age does bring challenges, the problem isnt that serious. The report says that the majority of people over the age of 85 actually rate their health and quality of life as good.According to the report, there are two key factors for the
